A Short History of Candida overgrowth
Though doctors know little, it was a couple doctors who first discovered that fungal yeast can overgrow in the body and cause all kinds of toxic symptoms.
1953 Dr. Orian Truss, 1986 -Dr. William Crook
In 1953 Dr Orian Truss discovered the devastating effects of antibiotics in an Alabama (USA) hospital. He began exploring ways of treating what he called “antibiotic syndrome” (interesting name, eh? -ed.). In the 80’s, the idea of Candida overgrowth went public with the publishing of “The Yeast Connection” by Dr. William Crook and “The Missing Diagnosis” by Dr. Truss. Their books detailed how our natural and even beneficial Candida yeast begins to change into something new and very different and warned us how certain, modern conditions promote this transformation from good yeast to bad. Dr. Crook showed a way to fight this condition and limit it’s symptoms by “starving” the yeast with a special and severe method of eating called the Candida diet. For people affected by Candida, going on the Candida diet was like being given a new life: yeast infections went away, energy returned, thought processes became clear again. It was a miracle. Life became normal again.
Until those faithful “dieters” had . . . a cookie! Or a piece of bread. A glass of wine. Well, just about anything . . .
As amazing as the Candida diet was it had a huge vulnerability. If you ate anything at all that fed the yeast in your body you found all your symptoms returning and you were at square one again -starting all over.
There are many ways to fail in the fight with Candida overgrowth. The impossible Candida diet is one of them.
Despite the new revelations learned about how to conquer Candida there are still people today that will sell you e-books or counseling to go on this all-but-impossible diet to eliminate your Candida.
Skip Ahead -the 90’s
A decade later, many antifungal remedies, both synthetic and herbal had been introduced to help battle this condition. These arrived in the form of both pharmaceutical drugs like Nystatin, Diflucan and mitroconazole and the natural antifungals like garlic, caprylic acid, pau d’arco, oregano oil, coconut oil, olive leaf and colloidal silver to name just a few.
The only problem is that the tricky fungus is able to “morph” or evolve to resist each and every antifungal, making them less and less effective over time. A person ended up where she/he started and the fight against Candida went on. These products were always recommended to be combined with the Candida diet.
The year 2002

Comparing Candida Treatments
How do Candida fighting products work?
Candida Treaments fall into 3 main categories and some minor ones
Category 1: Antifungal Products
This group of products relies mostly on antifungal agents in its ingredient base. You will know them by specific label ingredients like caprylic acid, oregano oil, grapefruit seed extract, Pau D’Arco, olive leaf, coconut oil, garlic, black walnut, etc. These antifungals will create a spiral of “die-off” which makes it seem like they are working. In fact, they are starting to work. This would actually be a good thing if the yeast were truly being eliminated for good! The problem with antifungals is they don’t finish the job.
The Candida (candida albicans, candidas, candidia) organism eventually builds an immunity to antifungal ingredients. (This happens in much the same way insects becomes immune to insecticides.) There are even clinics that use a complex system where practitioners rotate antifungals every few days so that the yeast overgrowth can’t adjust. The problem with these clinics is they are very expensive. You can easily spend $10,000 just to get started on one of their programs.
There are also products where antifungals are mixed with beneficial herbs like aloe vera and mushrooms as though it’s a whole candida remedy in a cap. These ingredients are based on immune strengtheners and antifungals. Antifungals, the better ones, the not so good ones, all go the same way because the fungus in your gut will adjust to them. This is true whether the antifungals are natural or synthetic.
The synthetic, chemical antifungals like Diflucan, sporanox and Nystatin sometimes give temporary relief but these drugs also don’t “finish off” the Candida — they’re not designed to do what is really needed, which is to restore the natural balance in the body which keeps yeast under control. Chemical antifungals also are very hard on the liver and are being made in ever-stronger doses. Diflucan, at it’s inception, came out in 50mg tablets. It now comes in 200mg tablets! You can hear your liver run for cover! The 150mg tablets of Diflucan are 3 for $125.00!
Vagisil and other topical “antifungal” creams will sometimes give temporary relief for vaginal discomfort but you are not addressing the root of the problem so the discomfort will return soon after you stop using the product.
One other type of antifungal is colloidal silver. This is a solution in which silver is suspended in water. Colloidal silver is an interesting product that has many uses. Topically it can help with nail fungus if you have enough of it to soak your nails every day. Internally we don’t think it lives up to its claims. We own a “micro generator” and make our own micro particle colloidal silver for testing against Candida and other uses. We had a customer who got to the point where he could drink this stuff in large quantities but it would not control his Candida. That was our experience with it too.
Antifungals work only if the Candida infestation is relatively new and weak. By the time most people’s symptoms would have gotten bad enough that they go searching on the internet for a cure… it’s too late.
With a name like anti-fungal you’d think this would be the just the thing to fight Candida yeast overgrowth, but they are not the easiest or surest way to fight most Candida infections. If you do wish to try antifungals we suggest you get several good varieties and rotate them every 4 to 7 days for maximum benefit.
Category 2: Enzymatic Products
Enzymes work on the cell wall of Candida and can attack it most anywhere in the body. It’s another good idea in theory. Certain enzymes do dissolve the type of cell wall common to these fungi. We’ve heard fairly positive things about some of these products. Some of our customers have reported that at least some of their symptoms were controlled by them.
The problem is, again, they are not strong enough to do the full job. (I know we keep saying this but so many things are “anti-candida”, yet to find one that is effective at fully controlling difficult Candida symptoms is the key.)
Candida is much too vigorous to be defeated by enzymes alone. The problem is that the “fungal factory” deep in the intestines keeps churning out new fungal yeast cells. Enzymes by themselves can’t effectively curtail this activity. This group is probably the second most effective group in fighting Candida.

Category 3: Probiotic (acidophilus) Products
These are the closest to ThreeLac of all types of Candida products. Close, yet still not close enough. It’s important to understand, Threelac is an extremely unique product. It contains probiotics that are not available in other products. Its mastery is destroying fungus, which no other probiotic is eqipped to do in the same way. It also employs a unique delivery system to get it through the stomach acid without being digested. Both the right probiotics and the right delivery system are essential.
Some probiotic products offer huge numbers of bacteria or are blended with herbs, enzymes or antifungals to make them “candida fighters”.
We have a refrigerator full of the best probiotics we could find for our ongoing experimentation. We have not seen any form of acidophilus by itself or even in “broad spectrum” groups being effective enough to rout the Candida from the colon, though in some less severe Candida cases the better ones may be helpful.
Some of the probiotics we’ve tried are Dr. Ohhira’s 12 Plus, Nature’s Biotics (Homeostatic Soil Organisms or HSO’s), Theralac, XtraLac and Total Immune Booster. The first three are world class probiotics. XtraLac and TIB are average at best.
XtraLac
XtraLac encapsulates some common probiotic strains and is sold on eBay by inaccurately comparing itself to Threelac. You could buy the same probiotics used in XtraLac in your local health food store (bacillus coagulans, Enterococcus Faecium and bacillus subtilis) for less than 1/2 the price.
Xtralac substitutes Enterococcus Faecium for Threelac’s Enterococcus Faecalis.
Enterococcus Faecalis is Threelac’s vastly different and superior probiotic strain known for its yeast eating capabilities (XtraLac is hoping you won’t notice).
Many probiotics are poorly designed.
With any probiotic you need to be sure of two things;
# 1. The friendly bacteria in them must be alive and kicking
There have been many studies of late regarding acidophilus-type flora — perhaps you’ve read some of them. These studies find that most acidophilus you buy is dead or largely dead.
From a ConsumerReports study on probiotics: “All products contained the major groups, or genera, of probiotic bacteria labeled, but seven supplements–four pills and three liquids–had far less than the amount claimed at the time of manufacture.”
# 2. The bacteria must have some sort of guaranteed delivery system that gets them through the stomach without being digested and into the colon where they are needed. Always check the labels, most do not have any delivery system at all. Though, over time we have seen that the general quality of probiotics has been increasing, along with better delivery systems.
(The Threelac product has both of these systems)
As stated above, we don’t find any probiotics outside of Threelac and Fivelac that can control Candida symptoms. Probiotics are the most effective group in general to help restore the needed balance and conquer Candida symptoms.
Polysaccharides
Various companies marketing polysaccharide products
In the last few years polysaccharide products have been touted to cure almost anything -even Candida.
One company MicroNutra also known as Techmedica sells a product called Candidol. Another is an European company called Nutra Formulations selling a product called CandiPro.
These formulas are primarily based on polysaccharides (aka glyconutrients, phytonutrients, essential sugars) in combination with antifungals.
Polysaccharides are constituents of certain types of plants and fungi. They are mostly derived from the aloe vera plant, that being the cheapest to use. The breaking down or digesting of the nutrients inside these plants was pioneered by a company called Mannatech. It’s an MLM company that sells this same type of product using these essential sugars as their base. See the Wikipedia description for more on this. It is filed under the category “pseudoscience”.
Companies using this same formula have created whole industries selling these sugar pills as a cure for just about everything. A Google search of Micronutra or Nutra Formulations will uncover that many products intended for a wide variety of diseases use very similar formulations.
They may have some health value as nutritional supplements but in our experiments with them they show little value against a Candida (candida albicans, candidas, candidia) overgrowth.
We do a Study on Candidol
We studied Candidol for about 4 months in late 2007. The parent company’s (Micronutra, Techmedica, Candidol.net) websites were extremely positive and enthusiastic and it sounded like Candidol was the magic pill for Candida. We were interested but suspicious of the ingredients list.
Over a little more than a 4 month period we spent over $2,000 buying Candidol for Candida sufferers who came to us with their early questions. Before they bought any Threelac we made them an offer of free Candidol if they would participate in our study and keep a chart for us over a 3 month period.
In all we worked with 12 different people using at least 3 bottles each of Candidol (following label directions). We received the following reports: One woman gave a positive report and thought it had done some good, 2 people gave ‘iffy’ reports that said maybe it helped a bit and 9 people thought it didn’t make any difference at all in their symptoms.
Ongoing research on this product uncovered a lot of smoke and mirrors. Micronutra created multiple websites going by various names to “blog” and to “review” Candidol (candidolreview.org -humorously transparent!). They were all made to look like independent blogs or review sites. If you tried to post anything on one of these sites you got an error message or your opinion simply never got posted. The same basic product formula was used in various combinations and sold under many product names for just about every disease we’d ever heard of. This seemed illegal to us. Apparently it was.
In February 2008 while continuing our research we saw on the net that the owners were arrested by federal agents for fraud.

CandiPro
The new product on the market from Nutra Formulations (CandiPro) appears to be the same general thing as Candidol. More essential sugars. A look into its ingredient base shows an aloe vera base combined with antifungals (see antifungals above) and sold as a Candida fighter.
We haven’t tested CandiPro itself. We may in the future but we already do know something about this general class of products from our study of MicroNutra and Mannatech.

Other Variations
Colon Cleanses
Yes, Candida makes you want to pull your hair out. But colon cleansing won’t make your Candida condition any better. Colon cleanses are fine for cleansing your colon and getting things moving again but they are not nearly specific or powerful enough to eradicate your Candida overgrowth and re-balance your body. Candida is way too entrenched in your body in too many ways to be “flushed” out of your colon. These programs come cheap and sound good but are simply a waste of money.
Those Awful Toilet Pictures
The psyllium seed cleanse fills your home toilet with the most astounding looking strings of matter that appear to be old “sludge” newly dispelled from your colon. Psyllium cleanses have been sold as colon cleansing for many years.
The pictures of the eliminated waste are so compelling they make you want to go out and buy the program and get that sludge out of your own colon right away.
Turns out that the gelatin-like psyllium seed product itself is what molds into a shape as it sits in your colon, combines with other passing matter and is eliminated as a long “rope” of awful smelling matter. While this cleanse does have benefits to your colon in general it is not specific to Candida yeast cells with their little rhizoids which hook into the cell wall and even burrow into it. Hydrogen Peroxide Flushes
Another system is oxygen flushing your gut with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide can flood your intestines with oxygen but it is quickly dissipated and gone. The proponents of this system actually recommend you drink ounces of this stuff all day long.
Fighting Candida Yeast Today
Everyone wants to know which product is going to be the most effective. Our research since 2002 continues to show Threelac is unequaled of all the products in the marketplace.
